The $35.6 million sale of three of Carmichael, CA-based Esakton’s stand-alone skilled nursing facilities to International Equity Partners has been conditionally approved, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Friday.

(Carmichael, CA) – The Eskaton Board of Directors announced today that Sheri Peifer has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of Eskaton, effective September 1, 2023. Ms. Peifer most recently served as President.
Eskaton CEO Todd Murch will work closely with Sheri over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth and successful transition. Murch’s last day at Eskaton will be September 1, 2023.

Labrador Systems deploys its first assistive elder-care robots

We’ve been keeping tabs on Labrador Systems since we caught a very early demo of its elder care-focused technology in a hotel suite several CESes ago. Today the California-based robotics firm announced that it’s begun deploying its Retriever Pro system to a handful of early clients, including, On Lok PACE, Nationwide Insurance, Masonic Homes of California, Western Homes Communities, Eskaton, The Perfect Companion, Presbyterian Villages of Michigan, University of Michigan Flint and Graceworks Lutheran Services.

Eskaton promotes new president with focus on growth
Eskaton, a Sacramento, California-based senior living provider announced it recently promoted Sheri Peifer to the role of president as part of a board-led chief executive officer succession plan, according to a news release provided by the company.
Peifer will take over for outgoing CEO Todd Murch, and she will oversee operations and strategic growth to meet increasing senior living demand.

Amazon’s ‘Alexa Together’ elder care subscription service for families now supports up to 10 caregivers

Amazon is introducing two new features for its “Alexa Together” elder care subscription service. The subscription expands on Amazon’s existing product Alexa Care Hub and includes an emergency helpline, fall detection response features, a remote assist option that allows family members to manage settings on the elderly person’s device and an activity feed for family members that notifies them when their loved one is active or if there has been a lag in usual activity.

Dining and culinary have always been one of the most important parts of community life for residents–and for executive directors, too. The pandemic and its changes to daily life and routines had a particular impact on dining, as well.

Q. How have you found that dining changed during the
pandemic?
A. Dining has changed in several ways throughout the pandemic.
When the world shut down, assisted living communities were no
exception. All the residents were isolating in their apartments
and were eating food off disposable dishes to limit cross
contamination.

Eskaton and Front Porch are partners of Lighthouse for Older
Adults, a CITRIS and University of California initiative that
brings technology-enabled health and well-being to low-income
California seniors during the COVID-19 crisis. Lighthouse for
Older Adults is a rapidly deployable and scalable digital
inclusion pilot program that provides internet accessibility and
digital literacy training to improve access to health care
services and communication, ultimately leading to improved
health, engagement, information, safety, and well-being
for 600 older adults across six affordable housing
communities.
Connectivity Model
The connectivity model for Lighthouse at Eskaton and Front Porch
is the deployment of property-wide Wi-Fi with the initial
broadband connectivity preference for fiber, and secondarily for
high-speed coax, depending on availability of services. To date,
Eskaton has completed full Wi-Fi installations at three
affordable housing communities, and Front Porch has completed one
affordable housing Wi-Fi deployment with two additional
communities in progress.

Senior living company Eskaton sees occupancy beginning to recover from pandemic

Like senior living companies around the country, low occupancy dragged down Eskaton’s revenue through the first three quarters of the year. But the Carmichael-based nonprofit says occupancy is on track to come back as recovery from the pandemic continues.
Net operating revenues for Eskaton’s obligated group came in 7.2% below budget for the first nine months of the year, according to a financial document disclosed to bondholders. The disclosure only includes financial results for properties that back the company’s long-term debt, which excludes its senior living community in Placerville. Eskaton is the largest operator of senior living and assisted-living sites in the Sacramento region.
Amazon announces Alexa program for hospitals and senior care

Amazon has two new programs that integrate Alexa into hospitals and senior living communities, the company announced today. They’re run through Alexa Smart Properties, which allows organizations to control a centralized Alexa system.
“Early on in the pandemic, hospitals and senior living communities reached out to us and asked us to help them set up Alexa and voice in their communities,” Liron Torres, global leader for Alexa Smart Properties, said in an interview with The Verge. Hospitals wanted ways to interact with patients without using protective equipment, and senior living communities wanted to connect residents with family members and staff, she says.

Lighthouse for Older Adults is an initiative bringing high-speed Wi-Fi and digital devices to low-income senior housing residents. The program was launched in 2020 by the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the Banatao Institute, a University of California research center focused on using IT solutions to build social and economic benefits.
CITRIS is working with two LeadingAge-member providers in California—Eskaton and Front Porch—to upgrade broadband access and teach residents to use wireless devices.
Centenarian, World War II hero honored: Retired Lt. Cmdr. Lou Conter celebrates 100th birthday

Retired Lt. Cmdr. Lou Conter is known for many milestones and accomplishments in his life.
On Sunday, Conter became known for turning 100.
Though his actual birthday was Monday, a large celebration was held Sunday at the Alta Sierra Country Club, where family and friends from far and wide showed up to honor the living legend and American hero.
Representatives from the California Highway Patrol, Nevada County Board of Supervisors, Grass Valley City Council, and many more all presented Conter with their appreciation.
